MANGALDAI: A group of unidentified miscreants on Saturday night physically attacked doctors on duty and staff at Mangaldai Civil Hospital, besides causing damage to public property and vandalizing hospital equipment and destroying papers.

According to hospital staff on duty, on Saturday night at around 10 pm, a group of about 15 youths, accompanied by a patient named Subrata Devnath (26), who sustained injuries on his leg in a bike accident, came to the hospital. As the doctor and the staff were preparing for shifting the patient to GMCH after providing preliminary treatment, the accompanying youths engaged in a heated verbal altercation with the staff and home guard jawans alleging delay in the process.

Some of the youths were in an inebriated state and allegedly started shouting slang words at the doctor and staff. They also allegedly vandalized the table, chair and other medical equipment of the doctor on duty, broke the glasses of the entrance and even manhandled the doctor on duty. When the staff and home guard jawan on duty came to rescue the medical officer, they were also assaulted. One fourth grade staff, Mukut Swarnakar sustained injury. After almost half an hour when police arrived, all managed to flee except one who was injured in a hot chase by the police. The youth identified himself as Kusum Deka (35) of village No 1, Bezpara under Mangaldai police station. However, he expressed his ignorance about the motive of the youths whom he had accompanied. He said that they were accompanying a bridegroom from Guwahati.

Meanwhile, talking to the mediapersons, Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan has ruled out any lapses on the part of police. “Police team reached there within 10 minutes of receiving the information. One miscreant has been nabbed and others absconding have been identified and will be booked soon,” he said.
