Hailakandi: In the run-up to Village Defence Party (VDP) Day celebrations, the Hailakandi District Police organized a day-long programme at district headquarters recently. VDP Day will be observed across the State on January 29.
Around 320 VDP volunteers from all the six police station areas participated with great enthusiasm. DC Keerthi Jalli in presence of SP Pabindra Kumar Nath and other senior officials unfurled the VDP flag at Rabindra Bhawan premises.
DC Jalli appreciated the role played by the VDPs in negotiating with emerging challenges emanating from different sources in the district. For the progress of villages, VDPs have to work in synergy with the people and police forces, she said.
SP Nath said the VDPs, apart from generating a sense of security, have to work to create a sense of belongingness among everybody.
Various games and sports viz, kabbadi, tug of war, musical chairs and cultural activities, including one-act play on drug addiction were organized for the VDP volunteers and prizes were distributed by the SP.
The day ended with an open session where the discussion took place on how to improve the VDP mechanism as a whole especially in crime control and intelligence gathering.
