GUWAHATI: A major relief for motorists, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed that vehicles will not be fined for exceeding speed limits of 100 kmph on National Highways and 40 kmph at sensitive spots on National Highways until sufficient awareness was created.

After massive uproars over the State Transport Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) decision to impose speed limits and fines on the motorists who violate the rules, Chief Minister Sarma asked the concerned authorities to postpone the decision for time being. Chairing a meeting with the Transport Department, NHAI, NHIDL, and the PWD(R& NH) officials on Monday, the Chief Minister instructed to suspend the decision to impose speed limit till full awareness among the people are created.

The Chief Minister is of the view that the concerned department and authorities should first create road awareness, then impose such speed limits on highways.

The Chief Minister instructed the Public Relations department to take steps for creating public awareness on road safety in the next two months by publishing attractive advertisements in print and electronic media involving celebrities from sports and cultural arenas. He also directed the PWD (R& NH) and NHAI and NHDCL officials to construct speed breakers and hang signages in accident-prone areas identifying such spots. He also asked to take extra care in the places where educational institutions exist.
