TEZPUR: Uday Sankar Saikia, veteran actor and playwright, breathed his last on Sunday night due to old-age ailments. He was 74. Natasurya Phani Sharma Award-winning artiste, Uday Sankar Saikia, besides stage performance, acted in different Assamese films and TV serials. His formative years were spent in the midst of cultural icons like Kalaguru Bishnu Prashad Rabha, Natasurya Phani Sharma and Mancha Konwar Chandradhar Goswami. He started his journey of acting at the age of nine years by enacting the role of Ekalobya.

He acted in Assamese films like Abhijan, Kash-ghar, Duronir Rang, Upapath, Sun Moina, Bahagor Duporia, Sarabjan, Uttarkal, Jalanjali, Bhai-Bhai, Jugantarorar Tezal Puwa, Atikram, Daag, Gun-Gun Ganey-Ganey and Sneha Bandhan. Tezpur Xahitya Xabha, Sonitpur Press Club, Baan Theater, Tezpur AASU, Sonitpur Journalist Union and hundreds of cultural activists, social workers, members of various cultural groups and organizations, local artistes and Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulen Sarma paid floral tributes to him and also condoled his demise.

In his condolence message, veteran actor, Arun Nath said that Uday Sankar Saikia's contribution to the growth of Assamese society would be remembered for generations to come. He was not only an actor but also a very amiable person and the contribution he had made in social and cultural fields were truly outstanding and unforgettable. He leaves behind his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
