SIVASAGAR: Jadu Baruah, a veteran freedom fighter and a well-known figure, passed away on Friday due to old age ailments at his residence. Jadu Barua, born on February 10, 1926, was a recipient of both Central and State freedom fighter pensions.
Barua, who was involved in the freedom struggle, had been working as an advisor to the Freedom Fighters' Sanmilani, Nazira, till his death after being involved in the establishment of several schools in the Mezenga area of Nazira as well as many organizations including the president of the Village Defence Party. He was 96 years old and is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters.
Jadu Baruah's last rites were performed at his native village Mezenga Borakhowa under Nazira Revenue Circle in Sivasagar district with full State honours in presence of officers from the administration on Saturday.
Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav and Superintendent of Police Subhrajyoti Bora along with Nazira Circle Officer Vanlal Limpuia Nanpui attended the funeral of freedom fighter and paid their respects by laying wreaths at the mortal remains of the freedom fighter. The deputy commissioner expressed deep grief over the demise of the veteran freedom fighter. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of late Baruah and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
The funeral was also attended by general secretary of Sivasagar District Freedom Fighters' Association Dhiren Chetia, executive members of State Freedom Fighters' Association, executive members of District Freedom Fighters' Association, besides officers and staff of district and sub-divisional administration and police departments and local people.
