Veteran political leader Charan Narzary passes away at a private hospital in Guwahati

Kokrajhar: Veteran political leader, founder secretary of Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA), prolific writer, former MP and educationist, Charan Narzary passed away on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Guwahati. He was 87 and leaves behind his wife, four daughters and a son.

Charan Narzary was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kokrajhar in Assam in 1977 as an independent candidate. Before joining politics, he was Professor in Kokrajgar College. He had written a number of books and was well known as a poet.

Born on May 28, 1933 in the then undivided Goalpara district, now Kokrajhar, he was a great politician, a great orator, a philosopher, educationist, social reformer of the Bodos, a distinguished poet, a noted historian and writer. Moreover, he was founder general secretary of Plains Tribal Council of Assam and started the Udayacbhal movement for self-administrative autonomy for the tribal people of Assam.

BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, Minister Pramila Rani Brahma and MP (Rajya Sabha) Biswajit Daimary expressed deep sorrow at his demise and said that the tribal people of Assam had lost a great visionary leader. They said that Narzary started the movement for self-autonomy for the tribal people of Assam. They conveyed their condolence to the family members.

Former MP SK Bwiswmuthiary, president of Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha, Janaklal Basumatary, former president of Bodo Writers’ Academy and president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), Taren Boro also condoled his demise. Meanwhile, his body was brought to Kokrajhar in the evening and political leaders and general public paid their last respects at his residence Mwiderkhoro in Kokrajhar town.
