LAKHIMPUR: Finally, the victory margin in Lakhimpur House of Parliamentary Constituency (HPC) in the 17th Parliamentary election increased up to a total of 3,50,551 votes as per the result declared by the Returning Officer cum Lakhimpur district Deputy Commissioner Dr. Jeevan B on Friday.
As per the result, winner of the HPC, incumbent Pradan Baruah of BJP secured 7,76,406 while his nearest contestant, Congress candidate Anil Borgohain bagged 4,25,855 votes. By this performance, the winner was potent enough to upgrade the margin far better than he did in the by-poll held in 2016 and what Sarbananda Sonowal, the first BJP MP of the HPC did in the 2014 general election.
In the 2014 general election, Sarbananda Sonowal won the election bagging 6,12,543 votes against Congress candidate Ranee Narah who became the runner up securing 3,20,405 votes and registering 2,92,138 votes as victory margin. On the other hand, in 2016 by-poll held after he had vacated the seat BJP candidate Pradan Baruah won the seat securing 5,51,663 votes against Congress candidate Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu who achieved 3,61,444 votes in a bilateral contest. The victory margin in that by-poll was 1,90,219.
It is notable that a report regarding the result of the recent parliamentary election in the HPC was though published in the Friday issue of The Sentinel with the figures of the total votes bagged by the BJP and the Congress candidates, it was declared in the report that the cumulative figure at the last moment might vary as the due process was ongoing at the time of filing the report.
According to the final declaration, the distribution of votes achieved by BJP and Congress in the nine LAC fragments under the HPC are as follows: Majuli: BJP-62,275, Congress-24,242; Naoboicha: BJP- 74,082, Congress-93,034; Lakhimpur: BJP-76,685, Congress-51,389; Dhakuakhana: BJP-83,502, Congress-47,091; Dhemaji: BJP-92,076, Congress-65,129; Jonai: BJP-1,57,264, Congress-47,932; Chabua; BJP-79,021, Congress-27,573; Doom-dooma: BJP-70,512, Congress-29,752 and Sadiya: BJP-78,500, Congress-38,860.
On the other hand, the number of votes achieved by the remaining nine candidates, who were in fray, besides the BJP and Congress candidates are— Anup Pratim Barbaruah of Nationalist Congress Party-4,527, Amiya Kumar Hundique of Communist Party of India(Marxist)-12,809, Arup Kalita of Communist Party of India-13,378, Ubaidur Rahman of Asom Jana Marcha-8,738, Dilip Moran of Assam Dristi Party-8,285, Bhupen Narah of Voter’s Party International-5,581, Hem Kanta Miri of Socialist Unity Center of India(Communist)-4,034, independent candidates Ambaz Uddin-3,890 and Prabhu Lal Vaisnava-4,866. Total of 15,220 voters exercised their franchise pressing the ‘None Of The Above’ (NOTA) button. Out of the 17,08013 electors of the HPC a total of 12,68,369 valid votes were registered in the EVMs in the election while the number of rejected votes are 361.
