Boko: Local people along with 'Ukium 26 Village Development Coordination Committee' on Friday took out a protest rally and organized a meeting against the newly-appointed Ukium village headman in the Ukium Community Hall premises at Ukium along the Assam-Meghalaya border in Kamrup district on Friday.
Ukium village is one of the tourist spots of Assam. The previous headman, Chambarlin Marak took retirement from his job recently. After that, the State Government appointed a new headman on May 25. After that a team from Ukium village met the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup district and they submitted a memorandum to the DC. The villagers alleged that the newly-appointed headman does not belong to Ukium village. Many locals from Ukium village had applied for that post. So they requested the DC to take necessary action.
According to the locals, the DC immediately forwarded the matter to the ADC to take necessary action, but till now nothing has happened. Lesmini Marak from Ukium alleged that the newly-appointed headman lives in another village which is around 15 km away from Ukium. If anything happens in the Ukium village, he will not be present to handle the situation on time, said Marak.
On the other hand, if any villager needs the headman's certificate, he will have to travel to the headman's village which is far from Ukium. So the villagers of Ukium area are opposed to the newly-appointed headman. They have urged the Deputy Commissioner to solve this issue as soon as possible.
