SILCHAR: Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari has been set up at the border town of Karimganj with the sole objective of spreading the human and divine messages of the great saint and monk Vivekananda among the masses across the country and beyond the sub continent. Youths of today in particular are confused and without any direction, faced with moral decline around and loss of human values.

The life and teachings of Vivekananda can show them the right path and lead to their moral uplift. With the message on education, culture, health and proper training and other modes of creative and constructive ideas, dedicated workers of the Kendra reach out the citizens. At a discussion held in the premises of Baby Land English School, Balaram Das, a frontline Sangha leader, said as per decision of the Vivekananda Birth Centenary Celebration, 1963, the rock on which Vivekananda was in meditation was to be dedicated as a memorial to him.

After surmounting series of obstructions and hurdles, at last the memorial on the rock became a reality, famous as Vivekananda Rock Memorial and a major spot of visitors. It was Eknath Ranade, the prime inspirational force, who went round the country, collected donations from people and raised the memorial at Kanyakumari. Subsequently, Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari for the preservation of the rock memorial and to spread the teachings and messages of the great saint was set up in 1970.

Vivekananda Kendra at different places of the country has been engaged in doing welfare works. For the last four years, the Kendra here has made a place of distinction for its various noble activities. A new committee has been formed this day with Lopamudra Choudhury, Dr Durbadal Das, Nikhil Ranjan Das among others holding different offices and responsibilities. On the day of Guru Purnima, a programme has been taken up and on that day, July 24, the souvenir of the Kendra will be released. The programme concluded with prayer for peace.
