LAKHIMPUR: Demanding permanent solution to the flood and erosion problem of the State and strongly protesting against the 'dominating policy' and 'exploitation' of the government, the Lakhimpur district body of the Voter's Party International (VPI) staged dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Thursday.
By staging the three-hour long stir with the display of placards in support of their demands while maintaining social distancing, the party submitted a memorandum with seven demands to the Chief Minister of the State and to the Prime Minister through the Lakhimpur DC. Through the memorandum, the party has demanded to constitute a civil society with the involvement of the dignitaries of social organizations and NGOs working for resolution of flood and erosion and representatives from the government with a view to resolve the flood and erosion problem permanently. Through the same memorandum, the party has also demanded the government to release the constitutional votership amount of Rs 6,000 immediately to the flood-affected people until the flood and erosion problem is resolved permanently.
Taking part in the stir, VPI State president Lalit Pegu stated that the dominating policy and the exploration of the government had crossed the limit. "The government has paid no attention to the miserable plight of the flood and erosion victims though they have clamoured for permanent solution of the problem and to secure their life and properties. Raising voice for the people under the rule of this government has turned into a crime and democratic leaders have been sent to jail. The State Government has not submitted any proposal to the government at the Centre to have the flood and erosion problem of the State declared as national problem," the VPI president said.
Lakhimpur district VPI president Fazlur Rahman demanded compensation for the flood victims of the State.
