DOOMDOOMA: Under grant received from the fifth finance commission for 2020-2021, a waste extraction project titled ‘Rehabilitation of legacy waste through biomining’ was set up at No. 8 Sookerating on Tuesday.
Inaugurating the project, MLA Rupesh Gowala termed it to be a step towards making Doomdooma a garbage-free township. The area where this project came up was a garbage disposal site previously and became unhygienic due to inability of the Doomdooma Municipal Board (DMB) to take steps for solid waste extraction. There were public complaints from time to time but to no avail.
District Commissioner (DC) Swapnil Paul, who was also present on the occasion, said that the solid waste would be divided into two segments - biodegradable and non-biodegradable. The non-biodegradable waste would be purchased by a cement factory, he said and added that a Memorandum of Understanding to that effect had already been signed between the district administration and the cement factory.
DC Paul further said that it would take three months to make the plot of land measuring about 12 bighas ready to be used as dumping ground by DMB. The inaugural programme was attended by chairperson Kanta Bhattacharya, Executive Officer Nujhat Nasreen and others.
