DHUBRI: Shopkeepers, residents of Netaji Subhas Road and people of Dhubri town submitted a memorandum recently to Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani and urged him to raise the level of the road and to construct it with high and load-bearing drain to solve the perennial water logging problem.

The memorandum stated that due to water-logging, shopkeepers were often forced to close down their shops on the both sides of the road as water spills over to their shops after a slight or moderate downpour. Water logging has become a perennial problem that affects shopkeepers and residents alike during the rainy season.

A shop owner of Netaji Subhas Road, Sanjib Paul alleged that the shopkeepers of this road are the worst sufferers due to water-logging and lockdown. "The other roads connecting Netaji Subhas Road such as HN Road, DD Road and AK Azad Road have been raised by laying inter-locking block. As a result, rain water flows down to this road and remains stagnant here for days together due to clogged drains and outlets," Paul added.

Biswajit Paul, an employee of Dhubri Medical Hall, alleged that due to the water logging, customers have stopped coming to this road which has affected day-to-day business, especially in the time of the pandemic.

"Neither the MP, local MLA nor the Dhubri Municipal Board and PWD (Road) has paid any attention to this road. Dhubri Municipal Board says that this road falls under the board while PWD (Road) says that it is their road but they do not have the fund to construct it. Although they had sent the plan and estimate to the State Government long back, fund is yet to be sanctioned," Gautam Saha, a shopkeeper further alleged.

Signatories of the memorandum stated that finding no other way out, they were approaching the Deputy Commissioner for redressal of this perennial problem. The shopkeepers also threatened to close their shops on the road if the road construction work did not start within a fortnight.
