LAKHIMPUR: Massive reaction prevailed in Lakhimpur district in the wake of water penetrating into one of the buildings of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) due to collapse of ceiling.

Sources said that the incident happened around 2:30 pm on Friday. At that time, a large amount of water rushed into the building due the collapse of the ceiling structured in front of the Ultrasound Room of the medical institution. The incident caused sensation among the people of the district.

However, the LMCH authority said that the incident happened not due to collapse of any permanent structure of the ceiling but due to collapse of false ceilings of the fire-fighting device.

"Water entered the building due to collapse of 4 or 5 false ceilings of the fire-fighting device. At that time, someone might have smoked cigarettes under the ceilings or cooked rice in rice-cooker on the floor. As a result of it, the false ceilings collapsed," said Dr. Nikhil Kakati, the Deputy Superintendent of LMCH, to this correspondent when contacted regarding the incident. He added that fire-fighting devices had been installed in almost all the rooms of the buildings of LMCH. A separate water-tank with a capacity of one lakh litre has also been structured linking the fire-fighting devices in order to douse fire during emergency. When asked whether any inquiry into the incident was initiated, the Deputy Superintendent said, "We checked the CCTV footage. But no one smoking cigarettes or cooking rice has come into view yet."

Under such circumstances, the conscious people of North Lakhimpur raised a question how the ceilings of the building could collapse if nobody smoked cigarettes or cooked rice there as per CCTV footage.
