LAKHIMPUR: Minister for Water Resources, Information and Public Relation Departments, Pijush Hazarika visited Lakhimpur district on Thursday evening. During the visit, the Minister inspected the spot covering 11,000 metres on the bank of the Joyhing River where the Water Resources Department initiated steps to implement a project to check flood and erosion caused by the river. He assured the public that the implementation of the project would be completed by the next rainy season.

The Minister further visited the historic Triveni Sangam, situated in the confluence of Ranganadi, Joyhing and Dhekianadi rivers and paid his obeisance at the Shiva Mandir. The local people appealed to the Minister to shape the holy place as a tourism hub and to implement erosion protection schemes to save the Triveni Sangam from erosion caused by the rivers. The Minister assured that he would initiate necessary steps for the same at the earliest. During the visit, Pijush Hazarika was accompanied by Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Manab Deka, Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan and the officers of North Lakhimpur Water Resources Division.

Earlier, the Water Resources Minister inspected various schemes implemented at Lali River under Jonai LAC of Dhemaji district to prevent flood and erosion. At first, he visited the erosion protection scheme implemented with the investment of a fund amounting to 6.50 crores under NABARD fund from Airamghat to Natun Mising Gaon. Then he visited the construction work of the Lali embankment from Bera Nagaon to Bholukaguri (3135 metres) with the investment of Rs. 7 crores under SOPD. He also visited the construction work of the Gai Nadi embankment at Hatigarh under the Sissi Borgaon area under Dhemaji LAC and took stock of the progress of the project.
