DIBRUGARH: Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Monday took stock of the erosion site at Koliaghat in Dibrugarh. In the recent erosion, a total of 220 metres of land were washed away by the Brahmaputra river posing a serious threat to Dibrugarh town. Pijush Hazarika was accompanied by Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan and officials from Water Resources Department.

Hazarika instructed the officials of Water Resources Department to take more precautionary measures to deal with the erosion. Recently, geo-bag technology and porcupines were used to stop the erosion in the area. Pijush Hazarika assured that permanent measures would be taken against the erosion in the area. The area was recently hit by massive erosion with only less than 10 metres remaining for the river to touch the Dibrugarh town protection dyke behind the Dibrugarh town Gurudwara on the AT Road. The sudden change of course of the Brahmaputra is one of the main reason of the massive erosion, according to experts. After the 1950 earthquake, the river course of Brahmaputra has changed and the river came closure to the Dibrugarh town.

Earlier, the river was far away from Dibrugarh town. Dibrugarh has been facing the threat of soil erosion for last several decades but still no permanent solution has been taken to protect the town from marauding erosion.
