DIBRUGARH: Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday visited Hatikhuli and Phelai areas under Sadiya constituency of Tinsukia district and inspected the erosion caused by the Brahmaputra River.

The minister directed officials to lay 2,500 Geo jumbo bags along the river as a temporary measure to stem the erosion in the two areas. The minister also inspected the dredging work that has been initiated at four places on the Kundil River in the Tinsukia district.

"One of the primary reasons for flood problem is the gradual siltation of the rivers of Assam. As part of the river desiltation process undertaken by the government, dredging work has been initiated in the Kundil River with the help of a dredging machine. We are hopeful that this desiltation process will reduce the fury of the floods in the adjoining areas of the Kundil River," Hazarika said.

MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Bolin Chetia, the superintending engineer and the executive engineer of the water resources department as well as district officials were present during the inspection.

Earlier, the minister visited Tengabari ghat in Mulukgaon in Chabua area of Dibrugarh district and inspected the projects taken up to prevent erosion caused by the Brahmaputra.
