TAMULPUR: Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Friday visited the flood-affected areas of Kamalpur, Barama and Tamulpur constituency and took stock of the flood situation and facilities provided to the flood victims. In the first half, the minister reached Kalajal and Matkuchi areas of Kamalpur constituency and took stock of the flood and erosion of Kalajal, Suklai and Puthimari Rivers. He ordered the district administration to manage shelter for the flood-affected people on one side of the highway itself if required and desired by the locals. The minister also visited a flood relief camp at Arunodoi High Secondary school of Barama constituency and spoke with the flood-affected people of staying at the camp.
The minister ordered the Deputy Commissioner to release the one-time grant on time to the people whose houses had been damaged in the flood. In the afternoon, the minister visited Jartaluk area of Tamulpur and took stock of the erosion of Pagladiya River in the area.
Speaking to the local media out there, minister Hazarika said that he felt disturbed and unhappy when he got to know that an eroded embankment is breached without getting any attention from the department. He said, "After getting to know that an embankment is being eroded, we can at least try to safeguard it by attending the erosion with emergency work." In many cases, the Water Resources department is handling such cases and protecting the eroded embankments with proper work at proper time. The minister ordered all the engineers, officials and other workers of the department to do more hard work and take emergency measures to protect the embankments.
