Guwahati: A 15-year-old missing child reunited with his parents in Guwahati on Saturday. Mithun Debnath went missing from West Bengal's Cooch Behar district three years ago. The 15-year-old child is a special child with mental and learning problems.
Mithun Debanath was found in Dhubri, Assam three years back. However, no one had any clue on how he managed to leave his home, and reach another state. He was then kept in the care of a Guwahati-based NGO, Destination by the district child welfare committee. The NGO works with special children. However, Mithun did not talk to anyone in the NGO.
The Superintendent of Destination, Chumki Bora, said that he did not speak or interact with others maybe because he was unfamiliar with the language. After six months of staying in the care centre, he said in Bengali that he wants to go home. That is how the NGO people guessed that he could be from West Bengal.
However, it was only in the last month when the Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Cooch Behar, West Bengal visited Dhubri. The issue about the Mithun was discussed with him, and instructions were issued by him to trace the address of Mithun.
The Child Welfare Committee of Cooch Behar traced Mithun's address as well as located his parents. When his parents sent the old photos of Mithun, the NGO were sure about his identity. Mithun's parents reached Guwahati on Saturday, and he was handed over to them.
Mithu went missing from home when his father went out to a prayer meeting three years back. Although the family tried to search for him for many months, they failed to get any information about him.
Mithun's mother was however hopeful that she will find her son someday, and was really happy to finally take him home.
