NUMALIGARH: Wild Aid Assam, in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences, Nowgong Girls' College, organized a webinar on 'Introduction to Snakes of Northeast India' on Thursday.

The webinar was attended by more than 250 participants from 23 States of India along with a few international participants from Nepal and Bangladesh. The participants belonged to different backgrounds like academicians, faculty members, administrators, researchers, students and snake handlers, among others.

The inaugural address was delivered by P. Sivakumar, Director of Kaziranga National Park and Field Director, Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, wherein he spoke about the need for creating awareness among the masses regarding the important ecological role of snakes. He appealed to the participants and involved organizations to work closely with the local forest departments to ensure that no snakes were harmed out of fear or lack of awareness. Rajib Rudra Tariang, Head of the Department of Zoology, Digboi College, delivered the expert talk wherein he focused on issues pertaining to identification, rescue, rehabilitation, scientific research and documentation on snakes of Northeast India.
