TINSUKIA: Man-elephant conflict assumed serious proportion under Doomdooma forest division in Tinsukia district after one person was killed on Friday evening and several dwelling houses were flattened by a herd of wild elephants. According to reports, Joseph Kharia (55) of No 1 Dibrujan under Pangree PS encountered a herd of wild elephants that emerged from Tarani Reserve Foest while he was returning home from Pupulajan. One in the herd attacked Kharia and killed him inside the forest after a chase. The elephant after killing the person got strayed. The strayed elephant has created havoc in neighbouring tea gardens and damaged houses of Sonaram Garh and Ilina Garh of Duarmara and Akash Orang of Populajan. According to reports, the elephant terror continues unabated and the elephant is roaming around in areas like Kajupathar, Koriajan Kathalguri, Bokapathar villages etc. Meanwhile, forest and police officials have retrieved the body of Kharia and sent it for post-mortem.
