Will Continue as Assam BJP President for Next 6 Months: Minister Ranjeet Kr Dass

Guwahati: Newly appointed Assam Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass who is also the President of Assam BJP on Monday categorically said that he would continue to be the President of state BJP for the next 6 months.

Speaking to a local TV channel, Dass said that though BJP follows one man one post rule, he can continue to be the party President for 6 months and this is as per the party rules.

"I will continue to be the Assam BJP President for the next 6 months. There is not going to be any changes to the party President position," Dass said.

Dass has been inducted as one of the Cabinet ministers in the just formed Himanta Biswa Sarma Cabinet. The swearing-in ceremony was held Monday afternoon in Guwahati.

Names of Dilip Saikia, BJP's National General Secretary, party's senior most leader Ramen Deka, Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa have been doing the rounds as the next Assam BJP President.

Dass who won the Sorbhog seat twice in 2011 and 2016, won the 2021 elections from Patacharkuchi. He along with Himanta Biswa Sarma is credited to have helped BJP script another victory in Assam. Dass has been among the dependable few. Recently when the over 500 people from West Bengal crossed over to Assam looking for shelter, it was Dass who was asked to rush to Dhubri and ensure that the people are safe.

The party not only has to decide on who the next party President will be but it also has to find a parking slot for former Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal. While some are saying that he would be offered a berth in the Union Cabinet which would be his second stint at the Centre (Sonowal has served as the Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister in 2014 Narendra Modi government), some are saying that he is keen on staying in the state and taking over as the party President.

Clearly, the party has a lot of important and tricky decisions to make.
