With Border Conflict Solution on Main Agenda, Assam-Mizoram Ministers To Meet in Aizawl Today

GUWAHATI: Following the bloody clash at the Assam-Mizoram border at Cachar's Lailapur where six Assam police personnel lost their lives and over 45 injured in the exchange of fire with the Mizoram Police, Assam and Mizoram have finally decided to initiate on-ground peace negotiation talks for the first time today since the incident occurred last week.

Two high-ranking ministers from the Assam cabinet, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora and Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal will reach Mizoram's capital city Aizawl today to initiate the talks.

The sensitive meeting that has been scheduled after 11 am at the Aizwal club, reports have confirmed that State Home Minister Lalchamliana and Land Revenue and Settlement Minister Lalruatkima will represent the Mizoram side and will be led by them. The primary agenda of the meeting will be that the ministers will initiate the talks in order to reach an amicable solution to the ongoing inter-state boundary dispute.

Both Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with his Mizoram counterpart, Zoramthanga are optimistic and are hoping to find an effective solution to the long-pending border dispute between the two northeastern states, Assam and Mizoram.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga tweeted on Wednesday saying, "Tomorrow the 5th of August, 2021 representatives from Assam Govt. led by senior Minister will meet representatives of Mizoram Govt. led by senior Minister. I am sure important steps will be achieved for the solution of the border problem,"

While Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to the tweet and replied, "Two of my senior colleagues Atul Bora and Ashok Singhal will visit Aizawl tomorrow with the message of peace from people of Assam."

It may be mentioned that altogether three Barak Valley districts of South Assam namely Hailakandi, Cachar and Karimganj share a 165-km-long border with Mizoram's Mamit, Kolasib, and Aizawl. Reportedly, there have been border disputes at five locations spanning across the area.

The recent scuffle at the border has proved that a 500-square-km stretch between Cachar's Lailapur and Vairengte in Kolasib happens to be the most sensitive zone that has witnessed two major untoward incidents of mob violence and a sporadic uprising of conflicts since October 2020.
