Guwahati: Nikita Agarwala Khemka who was found with burn injuries died at Nemcare hospital on February 5.

According to reports, the deceased was allegedly tortured for a long time by her husband and his family for dowry.

Reports further claimed that the relatives of Nikita Agarwal Khemka have lodged an FIR against her in-laws at the Dispur police station in Guwahati. Speaking to the media, the victim's mother apprised the media that her daughter had been undergoing severe mental harassment for the past years

In the meantime, the husband, Kaushik Khemka, has been arrested by the police.

Recently On 13 January, A woman named Dilowar Begum was strangled to death in Guwahati's Hatigaon area. Police suspected her in-laws are responsible for the murder, citing dowry as a possible motive.

For a long period, the woman's in-laws were reportedly harassing her for dowry. Hatigaon police have arrested all of the in-laws' family members in connection with this case.

Last year on December 23, a married woman was found deceased at her in-laws' home under unexplained circumstances. the Shilpi Biswas Dey (25) of Manojuli, Dhekiajuli, was married in March 2020 to one Rajdeep Dey (30), son of Pradip Dey of Manojuli Gaon.

The victim's family believes it was a premeditated murder because no signs of suicide were found in the body of the deceased. Furthermore, the family members claimed that their daughter had been subjected to physical torture on a regular basis since the marriage because of dowry.
