Woman in Udalguri commits suicide, police doubts moral policing and arrests eight women

An incident of a married woman committing suicide in an Udalguri village has come into light that has left the entire state shaken. The woman, allegedly, committed suicide in Murakati village under Mazbat police station in Udalguri on Tuesday.

As per the statements of locals, the woman committed suicide due to the alleged torture of a group of local women of the locality. The deceased woman, identified as Radhika Sarkar, is a woman aging around 20 years and this is being alleged by her husband that she was forced to take up the extreme decision of ending her life due to the mental and emotional torture she received from some local women.

Her husband says that his deceased wife had received life-threatening from the group of woman and one person called Pinku Sarkar. Not only this, but Pinku Sarkar had also attempted to kill her on Monday night. However, on the day of when Radhika committed suicide, a group of woman and Pinku Sarkar’s wife went to their home again and tortured her.

This incident of local women harassing her and finally compelling her to commit suicide has been suspected as a case of moral policing by the locals.

Mazbat police station officer-in-charge, Upen Chandra Barman says that they have arrested eight women and Pinku Sarkar based on the complaint of the dead woman’s husband Mithun Sarkar.

As identified and stated by the police, the arrested woman are Moina Nayak, Anindita Sarkar, Rekha Swargiary, Ranjana Das Rabha, Anita Bhujel, Radhika Chauhan, Jenisa Sarkar and Sumita Chauhan.

The police officer added that an investigation has been carried out to go into the depth of the matter and the real culprit will be punished as soon as police gain reliable proof.
