DIPHU: Altogether 30 participants took part in the 15-day training-cum-workshop on Karbi traditional drum beating (Chengpi kethip) and making of Chengpi at Borjan playground, which is around 20 km from Diphu. It concluded on Thursday.

The training programme was organized by Diphu Cultural Centre and Cultural Affairs Department, Government of Assam, in collaboration with Sanskritik Abhijan Samaj under Mukhya Mantri Samagra Unayan.

Unlike previous training programmes, this time the trainees not only got to learn about different forms (angkung) of the beating of the drums but also how the drums were made. In the closing function-cum-distribution of certificates to trainees, Executive Member (EM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Handloom and Textiles and Town and Country Planning, Ratan Teron said that one of the important schemes taken up by the Cultural Affairs Department was organizing training programmes on traditional dances, songs and beating of drums. “By knowing the traditional dance forms, songs and traditional music one can preserve one’s culture,” Teron said.
