Workshop on potato value chain organized under APART in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Lakhimpur, in collaboration with International Potato Centre (CIP), conducted a two-day-long workshop on 'Training of Trainers on Potato Value Chain through Farm Field School Approach' under the aegis of the Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART) from Monday.

The programme mainly aimed at empowering farmers to strengthen their seed system, value chain development, productivity as well as profitability which would ensure better market opportunity to the farming community. Dr. Prasanta Kumar Pathak, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK, Lakhimpur put forth an informative lecture in the inaugural session of the workshop.

A total of 21 farmers from various blocks of the district participated in the workshop. On the second day of the workshop, farmers were taken for an exposure visit to Gingia, Biswanath Chariali. Dr. Brijesh Kumar, Associate Scientist of International Potato Centre (CIP), assisted by Jolly Dutta, Assistant Project Scientist, CIP, enriched the farmers with the knowledge of scientific procedures of disease-free seed production. He also held an exposure to various climate resilient potato technologies suitable in the environment of Assam. Further, he emphasized various avenues of potato value addition.

A farmer- scientist interactive session was also held during the visit. Participation of women farmers encouraged womenfolk to proceed towards commercial potato farming. District Horticulture Coordinator, Department of Agriculture, Manoj Kumar Panging, Subject Matter Specialist of KVK, Lakhimpur, Jyotsna Das, APART Project Associate Mouchumi Dutta, Assistant Project Scientist Brishti Saikia, and Research Technician Durlov Bora conducted training in the workshop.
