SIVASAGAR: With a view to raise awareness about the importance of safe blood donation voluntarily, Gargaon College celebrated World Blood Donor Day on Wednesday.

To commemorate World Blood Donors Day, an online awareness programme was organized by 11 Assam Girls (I) Coy NCC, 49 Assam Naval Unit NCC, IQAC, NSS and Women Cell (GCTU). The resource person of the programme was Dr Alakhya Baruah, MD (AM), medical practitioner, a renowned theatre personality and Vice Chairman of Assam State Film Finance and Development Corporation.

The programme was inaugurated by renowned academician and Principal of Gargaon College, Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta. In his inaugural address, Dr Mahanta spoke on the importance of donating blood as blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person – the gift of life. He narrated how as an active member of Red Cross Society, he has been donating blood countless times. Talking about the importance of the day, he gave an insight on the theme of this year ‘Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often’ which focuses on patients requiring life-long transfusion support and underlines the role every single person can play, by giving the valuable gift of blood or plasma. He urged people to stay away from the myths related to blood donation and explained how giving blood may help our body’s detoxing potential. He encouraged the people to donate blood and contribute to the well-being of not only the family, but also of the society as a whole.

The resource person, Dr Alakhya Baruah explained how transfusing or donating blood or its components to the needy person has become very important part of humanity in the modern health care system. He said that during a regular donation, one can give around 470 ml of whole blood and our body replaces this volume within 24 to 48 hours, and replenishes red blood cells in 10 to 12 weeks. He further emphasized that one should donate blood at least 2-3 times a year since it can help maintain a healthy heart and overall good health.

The webinar, moderated by Dr Raktim Patar, CTO, 49 Assam Naval, concluded with a thought-provoking question and answer session where the expert answered the queries of the participants. The programme was attended by faculty, students and NCC Cadets of Gargaon College.

DIBRUGARH: On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, JCI Dibrugarh Royals organized a blood donation camp at Dibrugarh on Wednesday. A total of 30 units of blood were collected in the camp organized in collaboration with Apeksha Hospitals, Dibrugarh. JCI Royal expressed their gratitude to the Apeksha hospital for the hospitality of the entire management. President Rachita Bhartia Garodia thanked all members of JCI Royals for their dedication and commitment which made the camp a grand success.

GOLAGHAT: To mark the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, the cadets from 74 Assam Girls (I) Company and 12 Assam (I) Company along with the blood bank of Civil Hospital, Golaghat, organized a one-day camp at DR College, Golaghat on Thursday. Every year NCC celebrates this day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary blood donors for their life-saving gifts in the form of blood. The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2023 is ‘Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often’. This camp was attended by 93 cadets, 2 ANO/CTO, 10 PI staff and 01offr. A total of 37 individuals donated blood. Dr Biju Bora, counsellor, Blood Bank, Golaghat Swahid Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital, conveyed gratitude to the young cadets and said that they are the torch bearers of the modern society. She also gave away certificates to the donors as a mark of appreciation for their noble deed.
