GUWAHATI: Voice of Environment (VoE), a scientific and environmental research organization based in Guwahati, Assam, celebrated World Environment Day on Monday (June 5) on the theme of “Solutions to plastic pollution” in the premises of Regional Science Centre, Guwahati. The program was a part of VoE’s ongoing initiative on environmental education and awareness mission among the students, youths and community.

The program was conducted in collaboration with the Regional Science Centre, Guwahati, a unit of the National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.

The program started at around 9.40 am (IST) with a plantation drive conducted in the institution premises in the presence of Shri Sujay Majumder, Curator and Project Coordinator, Regional Science Center, Guwahati, Shri Ramendra Medhi, Education Officer, Shri Prema Dhar Das, Education Officer, Shri Subrata Sarkar, Administrative Assistant of Regional Science Center, Guwahati. The team VoE led by Environmentalist Moharana Choudhury, along with Dr. Hari Prasad Agarwal, Principal, Department of Architecture, The Assam Royal Global University, Guwahati, Bhaskar Hazarika, Subita Dutta, Sunita Mishra, Dhanjit Gogoi, Anju Gogoi, Anita Bora, Debopam Purkayastha, ER. Rajesh Dutta, Senior Engineering Consultant, ASDMA, Dispur Guwahati (guest from VoE) & other VoE team members, students, teachers from different schools/institutions and general visitors.

At this august gathering, environmentalist Moharana Choudhury offered a plant sapling as a symbolic message toward a sustainable and green environment to Shri Sujay Majumder, Curator and Project Coordinator, Regional Science Center, Guwahati. Team Voice of Environment (VoE) members also offered plant saplings to other officials for adoption.The program continued with varieties of participatory activities like art & poster competitions.

A presentation was delivered by Dr. Hari Prasad Agarwal, Principal, Department of Architecture, The Assam Royal Global University, Guwahati, as a guest speaker from Voice of Environment (VoE) on “Waste Management Integration with Urban Farming”. In this session, Dr. Agarwal highlighted the segregation of municipal waste from the household level to curve the overall municipal waste. He also talked about segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste from the household level. He also added regarding composting, which can be done at the house level to use further in farming activities.

The program was further followed by some participatory nature games, the prize distribution ceremony and a Science Film Show in the auditorium at the end. The program ended with a vote of thanks.
