World Environment Day observed across Assam

TEZPUR: A day-long programme on World Environment Day with the theme, 'Only one earth' was organized by KVK, Sonitpur, Napam at KVK campus. The programme started with an inaugural speech of Angana Sarmah (i/c) Head, KVK, Sonitpur. In the inaugural session, Angana Sarmah welcomed the participants and made aware the farmers about the importance of plants for living sustainably in harmony with nature. She also emphasized the role of farming community in mitigating the effects of climate change. A plantation programme of medicinal/fruit plant saplings was conducted in the KVK campus and roadsides where 35 students from Assam Agricultural university undergoing RAWEP and farmers and farm women of nearby villages actively participated.

The medicinal/fruit plant saplings were also distributed among the farmers. One painting competition on the theme was also conducted among RAWEP students and prizes were distributed. Dr. Ranjit Bordoloi, SMS (Fishery Science), Dr. Roji Chutia, SMS (Agronomy), Dr. Namita Dutta, SMS (Soil Science), Sarmistha Borgohain (PAC), Uttam Jyoti Sarmah (OSA), Jitam Kasyap (JSCO), APART officials and other KVK staff were also present in the programme.

SIVASAGAR: World Environment Day Was celebrated in Sibsagar Commerce College with a day long programme on Sunday. Under the leadership of the College Union Body, NSS members and NCC cadets launched a plantation and a cleaning programme. After that Mass Communication Department organized a poster-making competition and street play on the preservation of Panidihing Bird Sanctuary. This was followed by a meeting where natural innovator Abhijit Dwarah, Environmental activist Pankaj Agarwalla and the achievers of Inter College Youth Festival were felicitated. Dr Utpal Dutta, Rupam Bezbarua, Alumni Association president Noren Changmai also addressed the gathering. The meeting was presided by Principal of the college Dr Saumar Jyoti Mahanta and Assistant Prof. Dr Pankaj Hazarika.

GAURISAGAR: Along with the rest of the world, World Environment Day was observed in Nazira Sub Division under the joint aegis of Nazira Sub Divisional administration and Nazira Municipality Board. A cleanliness drive was performed at Baruah Pukhuripar. A sub divisional level drawing competition was held at Nazira college in three groups among the school students. Sabyasachi Kashyap, ADC-cum -SDO(civil), Nazira inaugurated the competition. On this occasion, a logo (Pratik pot ) 'I Love Nazira' was installed in front of Nazira Sub Divisional Office for beautification which was unveiled by Bornali Chetiau, Chairman, Nazira Municipality Board. The other dignitaries who attended the function were Van Lal Limpuie Nampuie, Circle Officer, Nazira Revenue Circle, Dr.Bornali Dutta, SDIPRO, Nazira, Kobita Mech, Chairperson, Simaluguri Municipality Board, Bonbandhu Niron Gogoi.

DOOMDOOMA: World Environment Day was observed by Assam Science Society (ASS), Doomdooma Branch on Sunday at Doomdooma Girls' HS School premises. For that a meeting was organised at its auditorium with Principal Sangeeta Barkakati in the chair. Dhiren Deka, Secretary of the branch and Co-ordinator, ASS, Tinsukia District, spoke on the main theme 'Only one earth' of the golden jubilee year of World Environment Day summit organized in Sweden, the country which hosted this summit under United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1972.

The meeting was also addressed by President, ASS, Doomdooma Branch, Prabin Mazumdar, President, School Management and Development Committee (SMDC), Abhijit Khataniar and Assistant Secretary-cum-Science Teacher Utpal Pujari. From students' side Baby Barik addressed the gathering. At the end of the meeting, teacher Swagata Sonowal administered the oath on the environment to the students. The meeting was also attended by Assistant Secretary Khanin Phukan and lady members Nivarani Chaudhury (Das) and Rubi M Chaudhury. An art and quiz competitions were also held among the students. After the meeting, tree saplings were planted in the premises and a 'Minor Forest' was raised inside the campus by the members of the ASS, Doomdooma Branch.

The day was also observed by Rupaisiding branch, ASS on June 4 to June 5 under the auspices of Doomdooma College IQAC cell and in collaboration with teachers unit, NSS and NCC units of the college. For that trees saplings were planted in the Rupaisiding Smashan Ghat. Kshyanjeet Gogoi who was awarded 'Paribesh Mitra' award by Assam Government delivered a lecture on 'Sustainable Development in harmony with nature'.

DHUBRI: In Bongaigaon, World Environment Day was observed in a unique way jointly by Humanity Group and Bongaigaon Traffic Police at the Traffic Police Control premises of Bongaigaon town on Sunday. Besides plantation of seedlings in the police campus led by Bongaigaon Superintendents of Police, Swapnaneel Deka and other senior police officials, seedlings were distributed among the people crossing through the police traffic control point.

Talking to The Sentinel, secretary of Humanity Group, Prabin Kr. Baishya told this scribe that they distributed seedlings clandestinely but with a promise from all the recipients to plant the seedlings and monitor them.

The Humanity Group collected the mobile numbers from the recipients and registered them against their names and after a few days members will not only monitor but also visit the sites of plantation, so that plants grow to its maturity," Baishya said. The president of Humanity Group, Gopal Mahapatra and Additional Superintendent of Police, Luna Sonowal, Traffic-In-Charge, Dhiresh Boro took part in the programme.

DEMOW: Demow and its surrounding areas observed the World Environment Day on Sunday. Under the patronage of Sivasagar Tourist Guide Association in collaboration with Aranyam, Tourism Department and Forest a sapling plantation drive was organized in Panidehing Bird Sanctuary which is the only bird sanctuary in upper Assam on Sunday. In the programme Rajendra Mili who worked for the preservation of the vultures was felicitated. In the programme members of Demow Press Club, Sivasagar Tourist Officials, Forest Officials along with other dignitaries were present. On the otherhand under the joint initiative of Red Cross Society of Sivasagar District and 673 No Demow Town Primary School the World Environment Day was observed on the school campus on Sunday.
