SIVASAGAR: With the view to honour the unique and diverse cultural heritage present across the world and to advocate respect for and preservation of it for future generations, the Department of History, Geography and Central Library of Gargaon College in collaboration with Simaluguri High School celebrated World Heritage Day on Tuesday. The programme was inaugurated by Tarulata Likson, Headmistress of Simaluguri High school. During the inaugural programme, Dr Dilip Kr Deka, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Geography outlined the objective of organizing the programme. Dr Deka spoke on the significance of the observance of the day and the importance of preservation of the different heritage sites. Dr Boluram Das, Assistant professor of History department acted as resource person of the programme. He elaborated on different heritage sites and its importance. He also highlighted on the importance to preserve the heritage sites and the efforts required to conserve and draw attention towards it.
Dr Raktim Patar, Shomkai Manham, Assistant Professors of History department and Dr Pankaj Kr Nath, Librarian, Central library, Gargaon College have enhanced the students’ knowledge on different heritage sites through open quiz competition. Bipul Handique of Class X, Tuntun Gogoi of Class X and Deepjyoti Chutia of Class VII bagged the first, second and third prize respectively.
Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, renowned academician and Principal of Gargaon College appreciated the efforts of the organizers for conducting such an extension programme with an aim to raise awareness among students about the diversity of cultural heritage and to sensitize them to protect historical monuments and sites. The programme was attended by more than 100 students along with the teachers of the school. The programme ended with the vote of thanks offered by Dr Manjumoni Gogoi, Head of the department of History.
