LAKHIMPUR: The World Sparrow Day was celebrated in Lakhimpur by Assam Agricultural University (AAU)-Zonal Research Station, North Lakhimpur on Monday. A programme was organized by AAU-Zonal Research Station, North Lakhimpur on the occasion under ICAR-AINP on Vertebrate Pest Management. This year the theme for World Sparrow Day is “I Love Sparrows”. Every year the day is celebrated with the goal to create public awareness about the sparrows in the environment and the threat they are facing these days. Around 80 participants including farmers, FPC members, RAWEP (Rural Agricultural Work Experience programme) students under Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat and staff of AAU-ZRS attended the programme.
While briefing the objective of the programme, Dr. Prabal Saikia, Chief Scientist, AAU-ZRS, North Lakhimpur focused mainly on conserving the sparrows by eliminating man-made threats. He highlighted that, the conservation of sparrows could only be established through maintaining sparrow friendly habitats, using minimum quantity of pesticides and raising public understanding on the relationship among birds, human and environment. The inaugural programme was followed by a quiz competition to make participants aware on the value of sparrows in the environment and the need for their preservation. A skit play was performed by RAWEP students under Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat to create awareness on adoption of favourable habitat for the sparrows in the households. Towards the end of the programme, few agricultural inputs i.e. seeds of different vegetables, hand sprayer, watering can, rat traps, etc were also distributed to the farmers.
