GUWAHATI: The story of suicide is probably as old as that of man himself. Through the ages, suicide has variously been glorified, romanticized, bemoaned, and even condemned.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young adults worldwide. The prevention strategies of suicide should be tailored to the region-specific demographics of a country and should be implemented in a culturally-sensitive manner because it was found that the reasons for suicide varies from societies to societies.

On the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, an interactive session was organised by Assam State Aids Control Society(ASACS).

The special session was attended by Internationally accredited Psychologist & Psychotherapist, Dr. Chinu Agarwal, Phd.

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed globally on September 10th every year to raise awareness among organisations, the government & the public about the stigma related to suicides.

Assam has been experiencing a spike in suicide cases in the last few years, it recorded more than 3262 suicide cases in 2021 and the year prior to that it recorded 3243 cases which is a 32.9% increase.

If compared to the national statistics of suicide Assam accounted for 2% of the total national cases in 2021 which is 1,64,000. The 2% may look small but if compared to the whole country, it is a matter of concern for Assam.

This year's theme of World Suicide Prevention Day is 'Creating Hope through Action'. The theme suggests that people should take initiatives in instilling hope in each other so that no one think about taking a drastic step like Suicide.

Depression is one of the main causes of Suicide. Depression should be taken seriously and we should not laugh it off.

Technology is yet another cause though not visible because technology though have brought us all together, it has also lessen the physical meeting of people which is very important to keep our brain away from unnecessary thoughts.
