World Suicide Prevention Day observed in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: In order to create awareness on the profound impact of suicidal behaviour on people and in the society, Kendriya Vidyalaya, North Lakhimpur, located at Lilabari of Lakhimpur district observed the World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) on Friday in a befitting manner. The event is celebrated on September 10 every year with the representation of a global commitment to focus attention on suicide prevention. The event is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Saturday being a holiday, Kendriya Vidyalaya, North Lakhimpur, observed the event one day prior to the designated day. Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur, Sumit Sattawan took part in the event as chief guest and he inaugurated the agenda of the programmes by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Principal of the school, Bibek Kumar Chouhan explained the objective of the programme which was held under the management of teacher, Dr Paramananda Mishra. School counselor, Dr Dhruvata Sharma took part in the programme as resource person.

Notably, 'Creating hope through action' is the triennial theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day from 2021 - 2023. This theme is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all.

"The theme reflects the need for collective action to address this urgent public health issue. All of the society, such as family members, friends, co-workers, community members, educators, healthcare professionals and governments can take action to prevent suicide in the region," Dr Sharma said in her deliberation. She appealed to the guardians to keep their children free from mental pressure. She also called upon them to be friendly with their children, to identify their children's latent talents and then let them grow, develop with it. She cited counseling, conduct of awareness programmes, stress management training, forgiving attitude, and regular yoga practice as solution to various mental issues.

Principal of Gogamukh College, Dr Dilip Kumar Jha attended the programme as guest of honour. In the programme, the students of the school performed various activities, in addition to staging short plays to sensitize the students against suicidal thoughts.
