GOALPARA: With a view to create awareness and conserve nature and wildlife, the Friends of Nature and Wildlife (FNW), a local NGO observed the day at the Urpad beel, near Samaguri village of Goalpara district in Assam.

The NGO displayed hoardings on the bank of the beel with the slogans like respect nature, conserve the natural habitats of the animals, stop cutting and plant trees, let us not disturb the wildlife etc.

Later, a discussion upon the topic, ‘World Wildlife Day’ was also held where senior wild conservation activist Kripalochan Das focused upon the flora and fauna of the district and the challenges they are facing.

Other dignitaries like Yusuf Ali, Agia beat officer, Sengban Sangma, village head of Samaguri village, Mohammad Ismail and Ranjan Kr. Nath from the citizens forum, Aminur Zaman and Sofikul Ahmed from the FNW expressed their views regarding the need of the wildlife conservation.

A signature campaign in this regard was also arranged where visitors from the Assam and Meghalaya put down their opinions in favour of nature and wildlife.

According to a survey conducted by the Assam state biodiversity board in collaboration with the forest department during the January month, the Urpad beel which is known as the largest water lake of the western Assam, has spotted this year birds like lesser whistling duck, greylag goose, cotton teal, garganey, Eurasian moorhen, grey headed lapwing, jacanas, glossy ibis and many other rarely seen birds.
