Guwahati: Condemning the alleged attack against Assam's cultural icon Zubeen Garg, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the singer should be kept out of petty politics.

"Things could have taken a more serious turn had a security detail not been accorded to him", Sarma told media persons here, commenting on today's incidents when miscreants hurled abuses and insults at the youth sensation in the Ganeshguri area of the city.

Sarma added that the police force is on the job to bring the culprits who abused Zubeen to book. "We strongly condemn the incident and the Commissioner of Police has been tasked with arresting the miscreants who perpetrated this crime. The car's registration is available, so it should not be a major hassle", he added.

Weighing in on Zubeen's participation in active politics, Sarma said that the icon should focus on being the primary proponent of Assam's culture and be kept out of petty political affairs.

"I do not wish for him to become a BJP person or a Congressman; I feel he should remain the carrier of the Assamese culture and take it to new heights. We should not drag him into politics. These sorts of incidents bring shame to the entire Assamese jaati", Sarma said, adding, "the political leaders should not comment on Zubeen Garg, and no political party should claim Zubeen as its own."

The Minister further stated that "it is rather unfortunate that Zubeen Garg should be given protection by law and by the police." "This is a matter of great shame for the Assamese jati", Sarma said, adding that Zubeen's protection should be provided by the sons of Assamese soil.

In a shocking incident, Assam's singing sensation Zubeen Garg was abused by unidentified miscreants on Thursday (August 13) in Guwahati city's Ganeshmandir area. Hirok Rajbongshi, an accused in the Zubeen Garg attack case is reportedly on the run, police said.
