Silchar, May 21: The 57th Language Martyrs’ Day also known as Bhasha Shaheed Divas was observed at Binnakandi Ghat on Saturday. A number of people and social organizations commemorated the 11 language martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of protecting their mother tongue, Bengali, on May 19, 1961. Various socio cultural and students’ organizations, clubs and literary bodies paid floral tributes at the minaret. In his speech, journalist Ghurni Singh urged upon the central government and the State government to take concrete steps regarding renaming of Silchar Railway Station to Bhasha Shaheed Railway Station.
Bishni Kishore Dey, a LP school teacher, donated a piece of land in front of his house for constructing minaret for the 11 martyrs. People expressed their elation and happiness. In the evening, lamps were lit in every shop and every household. Among others who spoke on the occasion included retired head teacher of Jogai Mathura High School Durga Kanta Pandey, secretary Ganesh Roy and others.
