Barak Media Fraternity Welcomes National Press Day at Silchar

Silchar: Barak Valley media fraternity has welcomed the initiative of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to celebrate National Press Day at Silchar on November 16. In fact, as Shekhar Dey, OSD to the Chief Minister, said this is being done to bring about closer relations among the journalists of both the valleys of Barak and Brahmaputra. This is one of the many initiatives of the government headed by Sarbananda Sonowal.’ Namami Barak’ is a glaring example. Satananda Bhattacharjee, senior most journalist of Hailakandi, termed the CM’s initiative as ‘a classic demonstration of his sincere efforts to remove the scar of discrimination and negligence towards this valley.’

Arup Roy, an acclaimed journalist of Karimganj, hailed the decision to celebrate the great media event at Silchar and called it ‘historic’. Saatrajit Pal Choudhury, journalist of Cachar, said the State’s decision to observe the day for the first time in this valley is ‘quite noble and magnanimous. A meeting to take preparatory measures in this regard was held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner here presided over by DDC Jesica Rose Lalsim on Tuesday. At the conclave was present Kankeswar Borgohain, joint director of information and public relations, explained the objective behind the first ever initiative of CM.

Zahid Ahmed Tapadar, liaison officer of the department, said the keynote address this time will be on the theme ‘Reporting, Interpretation-a journey.’ He added to say senior mediapersons, intellectuals, educationists and lawyers will be on the celebration committee to be formed to see that the observance of the day is done in a befitting manner to make it memorable and eventful. Six journalists from the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi will be felicitated on the day for their remarkable contributions towards journalism.

The celebration committee will also involve officials of the district administration of different levels. A preparatory committee constituted on the day is headed by Laya Madduri, Deputy Commissioner, Jesica Rose Lalsim, working president, Rajiv Roy, ADC, programme coordinator, Kankeswar Borgohain, Shekhar Dey, advisors, Prof Kamalendu Bhattacharjee (Gati), Nilotpal Choudhury, (Jugashankha Group) Taimur Raja Choudhury (Samayik Prasanga) , Habibur Rahman (Nababarta Prasanga) and Niloy Paul (Prantajyoti). This committee will give initial push and dash to the preparation.

In order to make the National Press Day event memorable, a Souvenir enriched with contributions from media persons will be brought out. It has also been decided to honour an hawker of 60 plus, the backbone of media industry, on the occasion. Jesica Lalsim appealed to all concerned to extend their best of cooperation to make the centralised National Press Day celebration here a historic and eventful event.
