Hailakandi: In view of the final publication of NRC on August 31, the Hailakandi district administration sought to allay fears and apprehensions from the minds of the people.
As part of the confidence-building exercise, the district administration convened a meeting with the leading citizens, political leaders and other stakeholders on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli made it clear that those who are left out of the final NRC need not have to press the panic button as they would get sufficient time to file a petition before the foreigners’ tribunals. She asked everyone to spread the message loud and clear to dispel any doubts and to remain on alert to scotch rumors. Jalli also appealed to the people to remain calm and to extend full cooperation to the administration in maintaining peace and tranquility.
The district administration has even instructed the circle officers to take the people into confidence to remove misgivings and doubts. Awareness meetings are being organized to sensitize the people prior to the publication of the final NRC. Security has been beefed up at the 57 NRC seva kendras and in government and circle offices where the final NRC will be on display.
The police administration has been keeping a close eye on trouble mongers and has warned that strict action would be initiated against those spreading misinformation or rumours to disturb the prevailing peace in the district.
Superintendent of Police Pabindra Kumar Nath said the district has been divided into three zones with a DSP put in-charge. Security forces would be adequately deployed. Eight companies of CRPF, besides Assam Police personnel are deployed in the district. Section 144 is still in force.
