Silchar: Saraswati Puja was celebrated with great pomp and gaiety in Silchar along with different parts of Assam on Sunday. People were seen coming out in large numbers to seek the blessings of the Goddess of Knowledge. The town was dotted with a large number of puja pandals that were thronged by devotees of all age groups. Feeling of excitement and liveliness were seen among the students who paid obeisance to the female deity and sought Her blessings for their studies. The schools and other educational institutions came to life on the occasion of Saraswati Puja or Basant Panchami which falls on the 5th Tithi of the Bengali month of Magha. Being centres of education and knowledge, they observed the festival with much alacrity.

Some of these institutions also organized cultural functions where prayers, including Saraswati Vanda, were recited. It was Silchar’s Gurucharan College, a premier educational institute which drew applause for its artistic design which was modelled on the theme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. Gurucharan College’s Saraswati Puja was certainly a crowd puller. The festival, once again, proved to be a great unifier of different religions.

Students from other faiths were also seen taking part in the festivities and merriment surrounding the Saraswati Puja. In the age of jeans and top, the popularity of saris continues unabated during Saraswati Puja in this part of the country. The country on the whole is aping western culture and tradition. Yet, saris dictate terms when it comes down to celebrating Saraswati Puja. From the early morning girls draped in beautiful saris were seen flocking to various educational institutions in order to offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati, Goddess of Knowledge.

Teenaged girls eagerly wait for this day to wear saris and go to the puja pandals with friends and relatives. Students offered their prayers to the Goddess for giving them wisdom and knowledge. The ambience of the day was filled with religious chanting of the hymns, mantras, of course interspersed with the cacophony of Bollywood numbers. Boys and girls were seen posing for selfies and photographs in their best possible attire.
