World Toilet Day observed in schools at Hailakandi district

Hailakandi: World Toilet Day was observed in schools across Hailakandi district on Monday. Students of Indra Kumari Girls’ Higher Secondary School celebrated the day by organizing awareness campaign.

Hamida Akhtar Barbhuiya, healthcare teacher, highlighted importance of usage of toilets and harms of open defecation. Education was also given about benefits of personal hygiene and use of clean toilets and good sanitation practices. Demonstration was given to students as to how to wash hands before and after meals.

Highlighting the significance of the day, Headmaster, Panchgram Town High School, AS Choudhury stressed that appropriate toilets are important for women and girls to ensure their privacy and dignity. Former Principal of SS College, Dr. MA Karim underscored the need to enhance cleanliness, sanitation facilities and to make cleanliness a way of life to keep diseases at bay.

The day was observed at Nityanandapur Higher Secondary School, KTC Girls’ High School, GCRBM High School, Kalibari High School, AK High Madrassa and in other schools in a befitting manner, informed Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha. Hailakandi district has achieved open defecation free (ODF) status in October this year with construction of over 80,000 individual household latrines under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) with Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan constantly striving to mobilize people to put an end to open defecation. The district has 62 village panchayats and 331 villages covered under five development blocks Hailakandi, Lala, Katlicherra, Algapur and South Hailakandi.
