GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a 'yellow alert' and forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from May 17 to 21 due to Cyclone Mocha's effect.

According to a press release by IMD, “Light/moderate widespread rainfall very likely to continue over Northeast India during next 5 days with heavy rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh during 19th-21st; Assam & Meghalaya and Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during 17th to 21st May and isolated very heavy falls also likely over Meghalaya on 17th & 18th May 2023.”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall activity with lightning and gusty winds over the Northeast region over the next five days due to moisture incursion in the atmosphere caused by strong low-level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India.

According to the IMD bulletin,” Available data indicates that light to moderate rain occurred at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya; at many places over Nagaland, Manipur & Mizoram and light rain occurred at many places over Tripura with isolated heavy falls over Assam during last 24 hrs. Day temperatures had no large change over Assam & Nagaland; markedly rose over Mizoram; appreciably rose over Meghalaya, Manipur & Tripura, and markedly fall over Arunachal Pradesh during the last 24 hrs. Those were normal over Assam, Meghalaya & Manipur; appreciably above normal over Tripura and markedly below normal over Arunachal Pradesh during the last 24 hrs.”

The bulletin further predicted:

“DAY 1

1) Thunderstorms and lightning with gusty wind with speed (30-40) KMPH is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. 2) Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

DAY 2

1) Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind with speed (30-40) KMPH is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. 2) Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya and heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

DAY 3

1) Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

DAY 4

1) Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. DAY 5

1) Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.”
