46th Inter District Chess Championship kicks off in Lakhimpur

LAKHIMPUR: The 46th All Assam Inter District Chess Championship-2023 (Under 9 & 13 years) kicked off in Lakhimpur on Sunday. The championship was organized by Lakhimpur district Chess Association and Lakhimpur Chess Academy under the aegis of All Assam Chess Association in collaboration with Lakhimpur Girls' College at the college campus. The three-day long event was inaugurated by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka.

In his speech, the MLA said that the incumbent Government of Assam has initiated number of effective steps to bring change in the sports environment of the State. He added that the sophisticated sports stadium of Lakhimpur under construction would be inaugurated within next six months and a building had been currently under construction in the district for the chess players.

Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah attended the inaugural session of the event as chief guest, which was held under the management of Munindra Neog. It began with a sports related chorus song presented by the students of Lakhimpur Girls' College. Welcome address was delivered by Lakhimpur District Chess Association general secretary Jitumoni Neog.

The inaugural session was attended by All Assam Chess Association general secretary Rajiv Dhar, vice-president Indikabur Rahman, APDCL director Dr. Kashyap Prakash, Lakhimpur Girls' College Principal Surajit Bhuyan, senior sports figure Robinson Gogoi, social worker Phanidhar Baruah along with a host of prominent persons.

A total of 300 chess players under 9 and 13 years from 18 districts of the State have participated in the championship, which has been currently conducted under the management of international level arbiters M Arun Singh, Manik Dutta, FIDE arbiter Gopal Chandra Gogoi, national level arbiters like Apurba Sonowal, Ali Rajkumar, Puja Dhar and Bijoya Neog.
