DIGBOI: The much-awaited All Assam Amateur Invitational Golf Championship kicked off here at historic Digboi Golf Links on Saturday morning.

Organized under the aegis of Upper Assam Golf Association (UAGA), the 45th edition of the prestigious championship was inaugurated by Kishore Kumar Sarma, Head of Digboi Refinery, in presence of S K Das, CGM ( Technical) IOC, Digboi Refinery, Tridiv Hazarika, President of Upper Assam Golf Association, Siddhartha Chaliha, Secretary of UAGA, C R Baruah, Joint Secretary of Organizing committee , Kamal Basumatary, Joint Secretary of Organizing Committee and Dr Subha Deka, Treasurer, UAGA.

The tourney is being played at the only 18 hole golf course with a par of 72 and yardage of 6309 for gents and 5242 for ladies is expected to witness a fine display of skills and strife in various categories among the golfers.

Addressing the golfers and invited guests, Tridiv Hazarika informed that alltotal 123 golfers from all over India including one from Canada has participated in the event which is one of the oldest amateur golf championship in the country.

He also informed that in order to promote talented caddy golfers, 12 leading caddies also took part in a special professional category as a special attraction of this year's championship.

At the end of day one, Jakir Hussain from Assam who played two over par was leading followed closely by young talent from Jammu Kashmir Arindam Sudan who scored an impressive 5 over par playing for the first time in the iconic Digboi Golf Links. Six lady golfers are also competing in the event.

Earlier, The Sentinel Group, one of the largest and premier media concern, had also dedicated the Sentinel Trophy to the UAGA in 2017.
