GUWAHATI: Assam stormed into the knockout stage in the Vijay Hazare Cricket tournament defeating Delhi by 25 runs in their last group league match in Kolkata today. The highlight of Assam victory was a fine knock from Rishav Das who remained unbeaten at 93.
In the quarter final Assam will now play on November 28 and the game will be held at Ahmedabad.
Assam were invited to bat first in the match and the openers gave a solid start to the team. Openers Rahul Hazarika and Kunal Saikia produced 77 runs on the board in 15 overs. Although two inform middle order batters Riyan Parag and Swarupam Purkayastha failed to open their account in the match today Assam were still able to reach a respectable total courtesy to a nice knock from Rishav Das.
It was captain Kunal (36) who got out first in the innings. Rishav, came to bat in place of Kunal, played an attractive knock and also made a couple of good partnerships with Rahul and Sibsankar Roy. The second wicket partnership between Rahul and Rishav produced 58 runs and on the fifth wicket Rishav and Sibsankar Roy (26) added another 64 runs.
Rishav, top scorer in the match, faced 82 balls to play the unbeaten knock of 93 runs with the help of 11 boundaries and two sixes.
Opener Rahul Hazarika also looked good on the wicket but was unfortunate today as he got out at the time of taking a single. The left hander batter scored 61 runs and there were nine boundaries and one six in his 74-ball innings. The Assam bowlers too displayed good performance in the game and didn't allow Delhi to build a big partnership. Himmat Singh fought a lone battle for his team and scored 84 before getting out. Captain Nitish Rana (34) and Yash Dhull (29) were the other major contributors. Among the bowlers of Assam Mukhtar Hussain, Sunil Lachit, Rajjakuddin Ahmed and Riyan Parag bagged two wickets each.
