GUWAHATI: Assam’s boxer Lovlina Borgohain booked a berth in 2020 Japan Olympics defeating Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in quarter-final in the Asian/Oceanian Olympic Qualifiers in Amman, Jordan on Sunday. Lovlina participated in the 64-69kg weight category.

It was the second occasions when an Assamese boxer will be seen in action in Olympics. Earlier Shiva Thapa achieved the same feat. Overall, she will be the third Olympian from Assam after Thapa and Dipankar Bhattacharjee

Lovlina, the second seed, was favourite against the 22 years old Melieva and she performed as per the expectation. The boxer never allowed her opponent in the ring to challenge her and puzzled Melieva using her height advantage. Round II was totally one sided contest which Indian boxer won by 4-1 margin. Melieva needed a knockout in the final round and she tried well but failed to overcame the challenge of Lovlina. Indian boxer won the bout with unanimous decision.
