Assam Olympic Association (AOA) targets top-five finish in Khelo India

GUWAHATI: Assam Olympic Association eyes to finish among the top five teams in Khelo India which will be held in Guwahati in January. Assam will put huge contingent of around 750 players and officials in the Games.

Talking to the media persons the Secretary of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) Lakhya Konwar today said, “It will be the third edition of the meet. Earlier two editions we won 4 and 10 medals respectively. But this year we want to increase the tally. We have aimed at least 10-15 gold and among top-five finish.”

Assam will participate in all 20 events of the Games and the AOA has shortlisted 10 events where the state team can display good performance this year. The events are boxing, weightlifting, football, athletics, table tennis, tennis, badminton, lawn bowls, archery, and cycling.

Konwar also added that two promising stars of India Hima Das and Ashmita Chaliha will be the part of the Assam team in the Games.

Meanwhile, the mascot, logo, theme song and jersey of the host city will be launched in a function here on Saturday. The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Kiran Rijuju and Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal will attend the function. Zubeen Garg, the heartthrob of Assam, has prepared the theme song. Lakhya also informed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the inaugural function of the Khelo India which is scheduled on January 10
