Assam to host 71st Senior National Volleyball Tournament

GUWAHATI: Both men and women teams of Assam will start their campaign on the opening day of the 71st Senior National Volleyball Championship which will kick off in the city on Thursday. While in the men's category Assam, in their first game, will face Mizoram, the women's team will take on Manipur in their opening game.

This time altogether 58 teams from various parts of the country are participating in the championship. In the men's section the number of participating teams are 31 and 27 teams will be seen in action in the women's category. Both men and women teams are divided into six groups each and the competition will be held on league cum knock out basis. In the men's category Assam are placed in group 'D' along with Uttarakhand, Telengana, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Mizoram. Assam women team, placed in group 'D' will contest against Delhi, Telengana, Bihar and Manipur in the group stage.

Most of the participating teams reached into the city at the time of filling this news. Several of them also visited the Sarusajai Sports Complex for a training session.

The championship will be held in both indoor and outdoor courts. Altogether five courts, three of which are inside the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, will be used for the meet.

Meanwhile the opening ceremony of the tournament will be held at the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium tomorrow.
