GUWAHATI: DBI, came from behind, defeated Barekuri FC and lifted the 1st Guwahati Premier Football League title at the Judges Filed here today. The fate of the final was decided via sudden death, and DBI won the game 8-7 after the scheduled time ended 1-1 draw.

Both teams played good soccer during the 90 minutes of battle, which witnessed a good turnout in the gallery. Hundreds of supporters from Barekuri today travelled from Tinsukia district, base of Barekuri, to Guwahati to watch the game and their presence made the gallery very vibrant.

The first half was dominated by Barekuri FC and they also took the lead in the 28th minute through S. George Kom. However, in the early part of the second half, Barekuri went into a little defensive mode which gave some extra space to DBI and they fully utilised it by creating one after another attack. Finally Monjit Taro scored the equaliser in the 62nd minute. Both sides thereafter created a couple of scoring opportunities but weren’t able to take advantage of them.

Governor of Assam Gulab Chand Kataria was the chief guest at the closing function, and he also gave away the prizes. Among those present in the closing ceremony were the president of the AIFF, Kalyan Choubey, the president of the AFA, Naba Kumar Doley, and others.

Champion DBI collected a cash award of Rs 15 lakh, and runners-up Barekuri FC were received Rs 10 lakh.

North East United FC and OILFC, the two semi finalists, also received cash award of Rs 2.5 lakh each. Donbok Lyngdoh of DBI adjudged the man of the final award and Ayush Das of Barekuri received the golden gloves award. The highest scorer award was jointly collected by Joseph Forebel (Barekuri) and Donbok Lyngdoh (DBI). Both of them scored 6 goals each in the tournament.
