GUWAHATI: Veteran swimmer from Assam Elvis Ali Hazarika accomplished the remarkable feat of crossing the English Channel in two ways on Wednesday. In a relay swimming Elvis covered a staggering distance of 78 kilometres starting from England’s Samphire to France’s Calais and back. The total duration of the swimming was nearly 31 hours.

Elvis and his partner started the relay crossing of the English Channel amidst choppy seas at 1 AM of July 17(UK local time) and arrived back on the shore of England at 11 AM on July 18.

Weather was not perfect this time and there was other trouble too in the form of jellyfish, seals and others. However Elvis and his partner negotiate all the troubles with great determination and finally achieved the rare feat which is the dream of many swimmers.

"A dream come true, and proud moment for all Indians and Assamese people..Joi Aai Axom," said Elvis.

It was the first occasion when a swimmer from the North East crossed the English Channel both ways at one go.
