GUWAHATI: Former international swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika is all set to attempt crossing the English Channel in the third week of July. It will be the second attempt for the veteran swimmer who narrowly missed crossing the English Channel earlier.
Sharing details of his Channel expedition to the media here today Elvis said, “I shall leave Delhi on July 7 and will start Channel swimming from Dover either on July 21 or 22. It will be two way swimming and will return to Dover after reaching Calais in France. The entire duration of the swimming will be around 32 hours.”
In this expedition Elvis will be joined by his swimming partner Rimo Saha.
It will be the first occasion when a swimmer from India will attempt to swim the English Channel in both ways in one attempt. Elvis feels the job is difficult but not impossible. “We will start swimming around 12am and it will take around 32 hours to return to Dover again after touching Calais in France. The swimming at night is a little bit difficult and there is also a huge number of jellyfish. But I am ready to face all kinds of challenges.”
Meanwhile a flag off programme was held at the Nehru Stadium to see-off Elvis formally and the event was attended by the secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Lakhya Konwar and several other sports organizers.
